About Me and My Mission

Born and raised in Lambertville, NJ, I graduated from Fordham University in NYC in May of 2013 with a major in Biology, minors in French and Theology, and a premedical concentration. As I was approaching the end of my Fordham career, I became overwhelmed by the number of possibilities in front of me: I could go anywhere and do anything. As I focused on it more and more, I realized that where I needed to be was in service to those around me, for as we hear over and over again in the Bible "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40). I applied for and was accepted to the Young Adult Service of the Episcopal Church. We are a group of 24 young adults between the ages of 21 and 28 who will be serving around the world for the next year. I have wanted to serve in Haiti ever since Kyle Evans, my former youth group director and old friend, first served there in 2008. She spoke of the people and the culture with such admiration and love that I knew I needed to go. Since I speak French, I will be able to communicate with most educated people, and I am working on my Creole, the most common language. 98% of Creole comes from French so I am hoping to pick it up quickly!

I will be serving at the Episcopal University Hospital in Leogane, Haiti. I will be working with the associated nursing school called the Faculte des Sciences Infirmieres de Leogane as an English teacher and with the hospital administrator at the University hospital in various capacities. I will be living with the nursing students in the dormitory, for which I am very excited, as it will give me an excellent chance to get to know people and understand the culture.

Here is a recent WSJ article that mentions the nursing school in Leogane and the nursing situation in Haiti in general http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323469804578525453424426408.html
